I just picked up a 1958 35 Super sea horse, and allready had a 59. One of these motors I plan to restore and the other I plan to beat the crap out of on the bay. My question is can I remove the compression release mechanism on my bay motor without affecting the motor operation (beside the obvious hard to pull start.) and is there any modification any one has used for this. Also does anyone have any parts breakdown on this motor, maybe a partsmanual. Thanks Quag

Simply remove the link arm from the rewind starter. Might not hurt to make sure those valves are fully closed. They could have been run if incorrectly adjusted, and have some carbon deposit.

Most of those things got removed long ago. They are actually easier to start without the relief--if you are strong enough to pull the rope.

Heck, my wife can't even start my 7.5hp.

Thank you guys, I don't pull start them at all, always electric. I just didnt know if you could just remove the components and still have compression. I am assuming its some kind of spring loaded thing that has to be pushed in to release pressure. Several of the 33's i have use the same heads without all the rigamaroll, at least thats how they were when I bought them. Ronnie

Basically the arm actuates spring loaded poppit valves in the head. I'm not certain off the top of my head, but I do not think they're actuated with the starter...just the recoil.
