new to the outboard scene , just got a small boat and 35 hp evinrude. its an older motor i figure early 80s. anyhow theres a little red ajusting needle you can move back and forth for richer or leaner., wondering how rich or lean it should be set? or just play with it till the engine runs A-1 ?

Welcome to Iboats, Jake!

Generally speaking, yes you fiddle with it until it runs well. A little more backgound is probably what you want though right? That controls the fuel mixture for the engine at idle. Universally, I set them the same way. Once the engine is all warmed up, set it to idle in gear. Then turn in (clockwise) the control until the engine begins to race a bit from running too lean, then out (counterclockwise) until it's happy and then a bit more. After that I accellerate quickly. If the engine hesitates or coughs, I richen up the mixture (counterclockwise) until it takes off properly. At that point, I center the control and basically don't play with it anymore.

It takes a while for the engine to react to changes, so it's good to leave the engine run a few seconds every time you adjust the mixture control.

Hope that answers your question!
