1983 35 hp J35ELCTS compression 110 and 112, just got it cheap. Rebuilt carb that wasn't really dirty, new plugs foot oil and starts very easy. Tattle tale pez well but very hot so replaced tstat and found wrapped gaskets, opened exhaust and wrapped gaskets as well,"swollen water deflectors" I guess is what they call them....passages not too blocked. Have water pump coming but will these swollen gaskets cause over heating? Really don't want to pull the head to check water passages.
This motor runs in a tank not muffs and seems very strong, I think it just wasn't cleaned after use and sat for a few years...any advise.

You must remove cylinder head to inspect the diverters / deflectors.

Diverters ( item 102 ) guide cooling water around the block for proper cooling water flow.-----On many motors the water from the tell tale does not go through the engine block !

Somehow you will have to find the factory parts breakdown / blow up.----It will make things clear for you.---Pictures are worth thousands of words.-----Crowley Marine---evinrudeparts.ca -----And a few more !!!

Thanks guys,,,,I did water pump today and found possible key way missing and o ring but looked newer, within a year or so....waiting for water passage gaskets for side of motor which are swollen badly. I did see deflectors on parts page 032664 (1) and 0335603 (2). I will put gaskets in and test and if still running hot will pull head,,not that hard just a pain. Scatgo, pull Tstat cover off and inspect stat, I had depris in small passages going to side port. Take ur time with bolts they will snap!! I will follow up.Love this site great stuff here!

The water pump and gaskets did it,,,runs great peez super strong,,,,let idle for 20 minutes without a problem.
Next issue,,,,,,the starter is new will not turn fast enough to spin motor, pull starts first pull,,,,using new #6 wires to battery, think I need #4?, maybe it's time for a new battery,,,,all grounds are clean and tight...12.6 volts but didn't do load test.

Glad you have the cooling issue handled. I would use #4 wires, but 6 will do if everything else is in good shape. To see if it's the battery, you might try jumping from your vehicle directly to the starter. And if that fails to hurry it up some, it's not difficult to disassemble the starter. Cleaning may be enough. Brushes?

I got it going,,,seems like former owner had key switch incorrectly wired.....always check. starts with first turn now! These old motors are pretty sweet if compression is good. Thx all!!! safe boating!
