Tell me something good. While in the process of servicing the lower unit I noticed a bit of milky appearance of the gear lube. Presure testing revealed a leak at the shift shaft bushing seal. I removed the bushing and O ring and seal and replaced them. Now comes my issue. The shift shaft would not mesh with the shift shaft cam. Apparently the cam has moved. When I look down into the gearcase I can see the part numberfor the shift cam where as I should be seeing the splined interior of the shift cam. What can I do to correct this ? I have been banging the LU with a soft mallet and hoping it might shift position. I have tried to get a long skinny screw driver to move it back into position. I have looked into the gearcase drain screw hole to try to see if it might offer some insight. Perhaps it has shifted into a gear (reverse?) which is preventing the cam from lining up ? Your insight is appreciated especially if you can tell me something good.

Fact-----There is a strong spring in there that pushes the clutch dog to FORWARD gear.-----It would never go to reverse.-----Take gearcase apart to get shift rod back in the cam.-------Not as hard as it sounds and very good learning for you.

That is the reply I feared, but I do appreciate it. No choice but to do it, when I don't know. All of this learning is killing me.Is the spring you mentioned what caused the cam to move. I seem to remember removing shift shafts in the past without running into the cam moving out of position.
BTW, were you promoted ? Or held the Supreme Mariner previously ?
