i ve noticed a little oil sheen behind motor when putting in water and should you use synthetic oil or regular motor oil .

Shouldn't matter, just use the recommended weight.

it smokes some when you first start it is that normal or is it leaking oil

I little might be ok right when you start it up but if it lasts for any amount that doesn't sound normal to me.
