35/40 evinrude

What do they do to make a 35hp out of a 40hp evinrude 87 model.it has a 35hp sticker on the motor cover but the seril #e40tlcud say it a 40 hp it will only turn 3200rpm at full open

Obviouly you are not getting WOT. The possibility of the cover being replaced exsists too considering the age. Most motors that are close in HP of the same design are modified through carberation. Yours does not sound as if your motor is getting full throttle. This could be timing advance or even the propellar. Get the manual.<br /><br />Check your data plate again too....mine lists the RPM operating range.<br /><br />Bob
