I've been working on this project for a few months now and have posted several questions on this motor and have had great responses from this crew. I thought I would post some project pics for those interested and parley another question in there, so first the question. The padding on the silencer is oil soaked and it seems to me it is nothing more than old fashion fiberglass insulation. I don't want to spend any more cash than I have to on this ( not that I have yet), so does anyone have a quick fix answere for this on how they replaced with local material? I need the same material for another silencer, which I will post pics of both. to be continued.

Re: 33 evinrude restore project / question

I have been rebuilding older Johnson and Evinrudes for several years now strictly out of necessity, I fish like a maniac and have several boats that are set up just so, for different scituations. I am a firm believer in having a back up plan on the water... for everything. not having the money to outfit my boats with new outboards I acquire cheap fixer upper's and do just that. I also carry two outboards on each boat, one smaller in the bow as an emergency motor, which gets used every year. Anyhow I never really cared how the motors looked , just how they ran, until I saw a few pic's of restored motors on this forum. I thought "WOW" they looked beautiful, and I think I can do that. ( I am a painter by trade). So this 1968, 33 hp Evinrude is my first real attempt, I picked up the motor originally for parts- long leg and a tiller arm. As I began to disect it I noticed a few key parts missing, but I had replacements from other parts motors, so after a quick compression test ( 110 psi in both cylinders ) I decided to go for it. This motor was filthy, missing parts, broken parts and used in salt water, A real challenge. I popped off the head and the water jacket was all intact so I moved forward. Looking back this was not the Ideal motor to use, and I am by no means finished but I have allready invested a lot of time so "in for a penny in for a pound" I will post some links of before and after pic's up to this point. I would appreciate and comments or suggestions as I am sure this will be the first of many that I would like to do. Thanks, Ronnie

it's looking really good. new motors don't have the filters, i would discard them. there is little dust on the water.

If you have 110 psi of compression on each cylinder, it looks like you have a good powerhead to start out with. Its also worth mentioning that the photos prior to the paint job don't show signs of overheating, which is a good thing.

While I know that you like to do the work yourself, one area to be careful of is in resealing the gearbox. I don't do my own, but my local OMC guy tells me that the driveshaft seal, bearing, etc., can be a bear to get out. The basic message that he offered, is that you have to be careful not to force the parts - if they require abnormal force, its time to get out the PB Blaster and "a can of patience!"

As for the silencers, not sure what the second photo is, but the fibreglass looks like it is a piece of garden variety wall insulation, cut to fit the tube. The pad in the first photo might be a stock item - I haven't looked at one in a awhile, so I'm not sure. I can tell you, however, that shop.evinrude.com shows this piece as being available at $4.25.

Discard the fiberglass from the second photo. It is for sound muffling, but you won't know the difference.

You probably wouldn't notice the difference if you discard the glass from the first one either. Actually, most all I've seen were wet. I can't see that it matters. Just wash and dry it out if it bothers you, or you can always get and install a new one if it is objectionable.

and every time you tilt the motor, the carb could leak into it. wetting it again. as it throws the float out of balance.

Re: 33 evinrude restore project / question

Ok so I understand the padding is not necessary, but I want to keep it as original as possible. I simply soaked it with lacquer thinner, then rung it out and repeated with mineral spirits and dried, good as new. as far as the gearcase goes I am very comfortable resealing, I paid a guy about a hundred bucks ( including parts) once, never again, I can't afford that so I learned how early on and recently bought a pressure tester. I will say if salt water infiltrates and is aloud to sit those bearings don't want to budge. and some of those bearings are expensive. fortunatly once you destroy one lower unit, you learn what not to do on the next. Well I have a few other problems to solve on this unit, and will post questions and updated pics as I go. thanks to all you guys for your input, Ive learned alot here and hope I can contribute something. quagmire60,
I have your little brother, a 28hp johnson '62. I'm a new boat owner and after hanging around this site, I thought it would be fun to get an old outboard motor running. So far I resealed the gearcase. We'll see how it goes this spring. Keep us posted on your project.
