My buddy has a 1990 Invader with a cracked 4.3 and he wants to replace it with a 327. Don't know the year, or serial number yet. Think it would be an Alpha one. Is this a simple swap? He thinks he can just bolt it on. Any info or direction would be awesome. I'll get serial numbers.

thanks, Ken

May need front mounts and a drive gear change if the motor is making more than 200 horse

Motor mounts will be several inches forward of the V6 mounting location. Will need exhaust manifolds for the V8. May need some pulleys to match the marine parts pulled off the V6. Depends on how the brackets and marine alternator, water pump, hydraulic pump all fit.

Carburetor may not transfer over very well. If needed replacing to a bigger carb, will need a marine carburetor, cannot safely use an automotive carb.

Should pull the heads and use marine head gaskets. Also need to replace galvi core plugs with brass ones, unless he likes pulling a leaking motor in a couple months.

the 327 would have less torque than a 350 due to the shorter stroke. the 327 was a high RPM motor, not a torque monster - a 350 would be better, however as mentioned, the drive will need to have the gears changed an a whole pile of parts bought to install.

the 327 would be a few generations older than the 4.3 and will have came out of a car, so in addition to marine distributor, marine manifold, carb, along with the exhaust, head gaskets and core plugs mentioned you will need a larger sump oil pan and a new flywheel as the 4.3 is a 1-piece RMS and the 327 was a 2-piece RMS.

however 4.3's are easily found in good running shape for under $300 and your buddy can be back on the water by the weekend.
