I have a 30 hp mariner the starts good but only runs on cylinder. you keep hearing a miss in the engine. we know the top plug does not fire over from the top coli wire.

it only has one carb.

Switched out the plugs and did the same. So switched the plug wires top on the bottom and bottom plug wire on the top. got fire to the top but then nothing to the bottom.

So we switched the coil and still had the same problem.

can anyone give me a hint on whatthe problem is?:(

Re: 30hp mariner

tested the coil and it was good.

Placed the switch box on my other mariner and it ran perfect. so i know that the coil and switch box is good.

took off the flywheel and found out the pulser leads were holding on by a few strains. but in the process i cut through the ingnition coil under the flywheel.

do i need the ingition coil and the lighting coil for a manual motor? (both of these parts are under the flywheel) there is no stator under the flywheel. and do you know where i can get cheap parts fr these type of motor?

You will need an engine SN for any of that info fishook. That's just the way Merc and Mariner are setup. Year means nothing. SN tells model, country built in, and all the other little differences between years.

I just went through that on my 30hp mariner,,it was the charge coil,,it charges the ignition system and if its weak it will only fire one plug,,both plugs fire every time together,,it wont have enough juice to jump 2 plug gaps,,remember charge coil not lighting coil,,waynebo

Re: 30hp mariner

Hi guys, awesome forum!! I also have a 1998 30hp Mariner with the same problem. Firing on only 1 piston! Yet when I checked the plugs out of the cylinder, both fire. I switched wires, plugs checked gaps all seem good. I will check the charge coil though, sounds interesting...Is this something an amateur can do? where is the charge coil located?...
thanks
new guy
