Would appreciate any and all offers for help or suggestions with this "heart breaker" of an engine.. Here goes:

2010 30hp ETEC with 5 year warranty.. Less than 55 hours on her..New impellor and water pump has been installed.. New wiring harness (F-N-R and landyard harness) installed.. New head gasket installed.. All by a certified / authorized Evinrude ETEC mechanic.. 1 new spark plug installed (mechanic broke it when installing new head gasket)..

New 6 gallon gas tank, fuel line and squeeze bulb.. New fuel line connectors on both ends.. Only non-ethanol fuel, 90 octane is used.. Evinrude's "2+4 Gas Additive" added to each tankful..

Problems: She "misses" at idle and slower speeds (when boat is not on a plane).. I don't have a tach to be able to tell between what RPM's that it happens.. WOT---no problem either, only when idling and going slowly..

Thanks for the help everyone..

Are you really far from the dealer? I ask because it's under warranty.

No, not far.. Boat's currently in the water dockside.. A pain in the butt to load up on trailer just to bother the guy with an "engine miss" problem.. I'd imagine there would be a charge for him to hook up computer, as well.. Not to mention, he'd have the boat for 5 to 12 days..

You bought an engine with a warranty, "bother the guy" and use the warranty! He's being compensated by the manufacturer for his time. If he doesn't want to help you, you need to do two things; Find another BRP factory guy to service it, and call BRP to drop the dime on the guy who wouldn't help you.

Re: 30hp ETEC running rough

take it back and have them look at it .i bought a 60 etec last summer and at least my dealer fell all over themselves to help in any way possible.i played with a couple of props and wanted the rpm,s dropped to absolute min for trolling as my boat is realy light and theirs no way im putting holes in the motor to put a trolling plate on .sorry im babbling.it takes 1 minute or less to hook up the laptop to your motors comp and that will tell the tech everything under the sun about the motor and how it has been run and how its running.maybe when the tech put in the spark plug he or she never indexed it.or it wouldnt be the first time a new plug was defective.

First check the sparkplug gap, should be about .030" and look for worn electrodes. Engine temperature is very important for a good idle so use an infrared gun to check to see if it idles about 145? to 160?F. If not, the new style water pump requires a different thermostat spring and if you had a severe overheat from before, the t'stat could be "blown".

If you have to take it to your dealer, ask him to check the thermostat spring, piston scoring, and for exhaust tuner problems that is spelled out in a factory service bulletin about water pump replacement.

The dealer has to check WOT rpm with the laptop to make sure the propeller is correct as if not, that can affect the running of the motor up to just before planning speed.

As long as it's under warranty, take it back to the dlr. You may have a fuel injector that is acting up.

Rich you have a computer on that motor which has 4 led,s on it.check your owners manual and it will tell you what to look for.bottom line is you paid top dollar for a motor and its got a warranty.use it .make an appointment with the dealer for when you can bring in and he can look at it .thats a new motor and i would not touch it period until the warranty is over and im very comfertable around older outboards .i know i will not be touching mine for 6 years and why should i .to me, i paid a lot of money for that motor, and unless its an emergency the dealer is dealing with it .

Re: 30hp ETEC running rough

Holy cow----you guys are "tha bomb" when it comes to feedback.. Like having 6 Uncles living right next door..!! Thanks for taking me "under your wings", so to speak..

Let me "fill in the blanks"..

Bought the boat, trailer and motor 2nd hand last Oct. 2012.. Had the warranty transfered into my name.. Engine ran well but boat needed work (restored the transom as it was shot and had a Mini-Jacker plate on it, Glu-Vit'd the rivits and weld joints inside and out, installed an 8 foot casting / sleeping deck, installed a "kicker transom" for a 2hp Mariner 2 stroke, etc., etc.)..

Anyway, 74 days later, re-launched the boat and she ran great for 2 hours, then began shutting down---water pump / impellor died.. The certified / authorized mechanic installed the "recalled impellor / water pump and thermostat" with new from the factory parts.. The engine had, at that time, 37 hours on it.. Relaunched and stayed close to home for 2, 3 hours runs and she ran great..The 3rd day I took off for an 8 hour run, covering roughly 40 miles total and while adjusting the "pin stting" on the engine to drop it down and dig the bow into the head wind, engine wouldn't restart.. The wiring harness was faulty, left me hanging and I slept aboard that night, 8 miles or so from home.. Got her back from the mechanic, ran her for 3 more days close to home and the head gasket was leaking, salt rind showing it's ugly head.. The mechanic "snapped" a spark plug during the head gasket repair and replaced with a new one, he said, and it's "marked with a Sharpie pen (for indexing, I suppose)..Engine repaired (again) and have been on her for 4 more days and she's missing just a bit.. (She did before, also, from time to time)..

I don't know if it's a "problem worthy of hooking up the computer / bothering the mechanic with", or----as a friend of mine has said, "It's a 2 stroke for the love of Pete, they all miss from time to time..!!".. But, like I said, it's got less than 55 hours on it and I was just wondering if it's "something possibly serious" or---just something annoying that "we", as owners of 2 stokes----put up with..??

Haven't pulled the cowling to see if there's any head gasket leakage yet, due to her being in the water, dockside.. Will be pulling her out by the end of the upcoming weekend and will see when she's on the trailer in the driveway.. So far, no issues with her, running strong, very good "gas milage" and "1 pull starting".. Just the "occasional miss" when "idling along" thru the numerous "Manatee Zones" here in S.W. Florida..

Re: 30hp ETEC running rough

Oh, I might want to add that here in S. Fl., all of my breakdowns, so far, have happened during "Tourist Season".. The mechanic had to "wedge me in" between other jobs, that's what's taken so long for all 3 repairs.. (Impellor / water pump--13 days.. Wiring harness--12 days.. Head gasket--6 days..)..

Hense, I'd have to guess that I'd be "wedged in" again as the tourist season is still here for another month or so.. That's why I "guesstimated" that it would be in the shop for 5 to 12 days or so..
