Hi,

I have a 1987 30hp Johnson with remote controls. The last time I had the boat out, when in forward gear the prop was popping in and out of gear when first taking off or at low RPM. Worked fine when in reveres or when I got up to speed. Not sure if it's a linkage problem or something worse. Any advice please help

Thanks, cbull37

Cable adjustment or the clutch dogs in the lower unit are toast. If you have shifting the engine by moving the shifter very slowly, that's what does the damage to clutch dogs. Shifting should be done quickly with a quick snap of the lever. The ratcheting you hear when shifting slowly is the clutch dogs grinding against each other.
