30/30 motorguide blowing fuse

I have a 30/30 Motorguide with a 30 Amp in-line fuse. It has blown the fuse 3-4 times. The first time it also melted the fuse holder. I re-wired it directly to the battery with a shorter wire, but it blew the fuse again. Is 30 Amp fuse right? Should I go to a manual circuit breaker? Thanks!

Welcome to iboats!

12V trolling motors draw close to 1 amp per pound of thrust, so you need to increase the capacity of the fuse AND its holder. Go with 40 amp to provide the necessary headroom.

You say "re-wired" it,to the battery with a shorter wire...
What size wire, how long is a shorter distance?
Did you use the same type fuse holder?Depending on what one you bought,it might not be rated at 30 amps.

I basically just shortened the existing wire. I replaced the old fuse holder with another in-line 30 AMP fuse holder. The wire is now about 2', it goes right to the battery in my little boat ( I have an Uncle Buck's Pond Prowler).

The first time it also melted the fuse holder.

If the fuse holder melted, then my bet is the fuse holder was corroded or loose which caused heat and the extra amperage caused the fuse to blow.
If the motor came with a 30A fuse, the put a new 30A fuse and fuse holder in it and see what happens.

The boat is pre-wired for trolling motor, and it came with an in-line 30A fuse. The motor I purchased seperately (used) and it had no fuse. I did replace the fuse holder & fuse (30A) and it continues to blow the fuse. Sounds like I need a bigger fuse & holder (40A was suggested).

You have to have wiring capable of handling 40A, not just a fuse. What size wire do you have going to your motor?

Don,
I am not sure if this went thru, sorry if I replied twice- The on-line owners manual I found said 6 gauge wire, and use a 50 A manual reset breaker. Thanks for your help.

Is that the online manual and wiring for the trolling motor or the boat?

The trolling motor, but its for several motors, from 25-54's. The wiring guide is for all the 12V motors, there is no different wiring guide for each one.

What size of wire is in the boat? The fuse is to protect the wiring, not the trolling motor. If the old fuse holders were the cheap spade lug style, I could see those overheating and melting carrying the 30 amps that motor most likely draws. I would replace it with a breaker sized for the boat's wiring (40 amp?), breaker direct on the battery and wiring off that breaker

It's 6 Gauge wire. I have a short (2') wire with a 30A in-line fuse going from the 12 V battery directly to the motor.

Well sir, you have a 30# thrust motor that just happens to draw 30 amps max. Therefore a 30 amp fuse is insufficient since on full speed, the startup current can spike above 30 amps. You need a 40 amp fuse holder or better yet, scrap the fuse and install a 40 amp manual reset circuit breaker. Then go fishing.

Awesome, thank you all for your help. This is a GREAT site, lots of great info. I am going to put a 40A manual reset circuit breaker in, and get back out there (after Sandy moves on out, that is).
