Could use a little help.
according to the numbers it is a 1991 150 black max. lost a cyllinder and had the powerhead rebuilt. got it back and after 15 to 20 minutes high temp alarm goes off . took it to another shop ,(that didn't want to do the rebuild"),they replaced the water pump and impeller and installed a temp gauge ,with no numbers on it. they put thermostats in it and it gets hot right now, 200, without the thermostats, it was running at 170 up to 4000 rpm and then it would climb. called the rebuilder ,he came out ,100 miles each way, he found a ripped gasket at the water pump. he said thats the problem. ran it around for a couple hours with him , ran about 150.
he didn't have the right thermostats with him, so I put some in friday. it went right to 200, (I changed the temp guage to numbers). pulled them out 150.
where would be the correct place to put a pressure guage in? thw hose to the poppet?
any thoughts, answers ,suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If the hose comes from a threaded hole in the top of the block just aft the flywheel, then yes.

I'm betting it's high at speed. No T-stats should make it run real cold all the time. Somethings plugged up in the water exits through the base.

A couple of things to note. If the engine has just been rebuilt it will run a little hotter than usual , till the rings seat properly and then it should come into line. In my opinion you still have a water restriction somewhere. 150 is too hot and 200 is way too hot. Hopefully someone will chime in that has expertise with the black max. It sounds like the poppet valve could be stuck closed.

Is the hot horn going off??? This is one reason I detest temp guages as there may be no problem and guage/sender is out of wack. I trust a pressure guage!!!

What is it reading at idle, in the water with the stats in? Is the gauge your using a outboard temp gauge or a general automotive temp gauge?

The gauge reads head temp. Get yourself a infrared thermometer and check the head temp to verify your gauge is correct.

Did you follow the recommended break in procedures?

thank you for your replies.

right after the rebuild the horn would go off at over 4000 rpms,we havn't let it that hot again.
the gauge is an automotive gauge. new sender (merc)
it runs at 150 without t-stats at an idle.
the rebuilder had trouble with the base plate gasket putting it back together.
I didn't have the infrared gun with me, but the heads are getting hot.
yes we followed break in procedure. about 15 hours on it now. will check with the gun.
we are mixing oil.
it is a xl model
then we are correct on where to put the pressure gauge.water line from the top middle of the block(threaded brass connection 90 degree) to the poppet valve?
serial # 0d021015(anyone know the exact model 2,2.4,2.5,xr4,magnum)
could the rebuilder put in a close but not correct gasket. (base or head)

wrong water pump?

thanks for your help

Re: 3 mechanics no cure

I've never seen the right waterpump base and gasket set not fit correctly. That would be where my concerns would start.
