after years of use (and abuse) i'm finally tearing into my old outboard that has given me loads of fun as a teen and after! i'm picking up new coils and tuneup kit from napa tomorrow and ordered lower unit oil seals and o-rings from laings today. my big question is: looking at a parts display i see an upper shaft o-ring that i assume is needed to seal off the power head? from below? when i pulled off the unit and shaft, there was no sign of an o-ring in the shaft slot. the top section of the shaft was really carboned up but cleaned up well. do i have to completely remove the lower unit housing below the block to install this o-ring or can i just install the o-ring ,lube and reinsert everything back together? i hate the idea of pulling all this off (and gasket?) just to reinstall an o-ring.- bk
