3 cyl vs 4 cyl

I am need of another motor--old motor was 50 hp Merc 3 cyl--wants to sell me 50 hp Merc 4 cyl--was wondering if the 4 cyl was a better choice and why other than obvious, or should I try to find another 3 cyl

If I remember correctly the 4 cylinder merc 500 was a very good motor. Merc made it for a few years after they normally would have redesigned it.

The 3 cylinder Merc 50 replaced it.

The 4 cylinder was made up until 89 I think, but was re-rated as a 45HP (Classic Fifty) when Merc went to Prop Shaft rating. Excelent engine, all but bullit proof.
