Re: 3.8l omc block

I have an engine with a spun bearing. I could have the crank ground and rebuild the engine but am hesitant to rebuild a block that is 17 years old and has been in salt water. the water jacket is probably pretty thin by now. i would prefer to get another short block that hasen't seen salt water if it doesen't approach the cost of a new long block, otherwise i'll just get that.

Re: 3.8l omc block

The 3.8 is a GM v6. OMC used them for a short time in the mid 80's. Mine is in a 23' Proline with the 800 outdrive. It has a Rochester Quadrajet carb and is rated at 185 hp. If I had the problem with the old block I would consider finding a junk yard automobile 3.8 to rebuild. Not only would the block probably not be rusted thin but the heads would also be in better shape than the original which has been running in the salt with raw water cooling. I changed my heads last year when one runsted through and flooded the block with salt water. The replacements cost $60 each from a junk yard and after a valve job looked good as new. I then had to put a couple helicoils into the block to get enough bite for the head bolts to torque up. Next step was a freshwater cooling system to help prevent further deterioration from internal salt water cooling the block. When all was said and done the engine runs very nice and no salt inside it.

Re: 3.8l omc block

It is not a buick engine, it is a chevy 3.8 same internal specs as a 305 less two cylinders (4.3 is same internal specs as a 350 less 2 cylinders) You can tell the difference the buick only 3.8 has the distributor in the front of the engine, the chev in the back. Merc used these 3.8s for only 2 years, then switched to the 4.3. Try www.twincityoutboard.com for a used one. I ve gotten from them, and we have no saltwater up here.
