Well here I go again maybe you guys can help me go a bit further with this, my engine s/n is 0B841907 it is an 88 165 hp 470 ( thanks Chris and Don for the info) but there must be another set of numbers I need as well. I called the local NAPA
to see if I could get a full engine kit for this, well I was wondering if you guys might be able to take me a step farther with this. What would be the proper gasket set number (NAPA) or (SME) line from them, as they are saying that there is another set of numbers they need, to look it up correctly. Hope to hear from yas so I can go from this point.

Re: 3.7 s/n issue

Well Don, I knew that much but they have a line of marine parts that includes the Mercruiser line of parts....mostly in catalog, and knowing the owner, he is a fellow boater as well, and knows where I'm coming from here, but just was wondering where I can begin the leg work so to speak to find the correct set for this engine. So being aftermarket is the only way to go from here (less expensive) just wanted to know if there was any further info and where I can find it. They carry the Fel-Pro line of gaskets, but also in the SME line, which
the listings for marine use include Mercruiser as well. Besides I get a discount on the parts as well. :D

The engine serial number should be all you need. That number nails down EXACTLY what the engine is and what parts it requires. The Mercury part number for the 'Engine overhaul gasket set' is 27-43186A1. (Only $250 from a Merc dealer, and you know you're getting the right head gasket from them, and a 12 month warranty.) NAPA should be able to cross reference that number.

Re: 3.7 s/n issue

Many thanks guys, Don apologize if I seemed to be short with ya about knowing about the 470 being aluminum w a 460 head and remembered reading about it in I believe it was one of your posts. I like reading these posts, as they all have a great deal if information
to them so I read on learn and ask questions when I have to. You guys are like a band of brothers and any and all advise is taken into perspective, not only to learn but to be able to complete this without losing interest, so I'm gonna order it through iboats, as they seem to have the lowest price even with my discount. Many thanks Chris and Don for the leg work, it's appreciated

Well I ordered it about five minutes ago guys , thanks this will get me moving.

Re: 3.7 s/n issue

Well guys I also ordered a carb kit for this thing as well. It wasn't part of the engine kit ( I know that it wouldn't) but I also didn't have any numbers on the carb to indicate what type of carb it was. I knew from the reading I had done that it wasn't a Rochester either, so I ordered the kit for the right one. The Mercarb based on description I know is very different than the the Rochester so I know that I have the Mercarb, based on that description. I never knew the differences, and combinations this project had until I really tore into it. My wife said I bit off a bit more than I can chew but she's all for it getting done but like all things in good time. What are the adjustments from closed (idle screw) to make this thing run smooth along with the ignition timing, and the firing order as the distributor is out too...? Now as far as the engine rebuilding and regasket are concearned are there marks (like in automotive) that indicate TDC ? Where can I find the info that will help me ( downloadable or paper manual) ? I did look around and didn't see it(maybe I overlooked it) Thanks
