blows out air in number two carborator instead of sucking in and compression fluxuates between alternate cylinders. Lacks power and cuts out from time to time. Compression good in all eight cylinders. I think that a reed valve is stuck. Motor usually tacks about 7200 rpm now I can only get 6200 rpm. What do you think?

I think spinnin' that thang 7200rpm is a might tight. Reeds don't usually stick open, they break, and when they do, (unless you've got fiber reeds) the engine tries to digest them and can't. The results is a grenaded engine. If you suspect you've got a broken reed, stop runnin' it, pull the intake manifold and have a look.

c/6

Hooty

I didn't say it wasn't a reed. I said if you suspect it's a broken reed, pull the intake manifold and check. Better safe then sorry 'er somethin' like that. ;)

c/6

Hooty

It is very common for the thin reed box to intake manifold gasket to "suck in" or to tear. That gives the same symptom as the broken reed, but is a lot cheaper to repair.

Had the same problem on my 89 4.0 V-8. That darn gasket sucked away at 150 hours. No harm done though.

But guys...power house said it's blowing out #2 carb. I don't think the reed needs to be broken. Could be bent or cracked really bad.

Unless I'm reading the post wrong, I'd say he has a reed problem. If he truly has been taching out at 7200rpm, It would not surprise me if the reed is bent.

Perhaps he could pull the carb and take a peek through the hole with a flashlight.
