i have a mercruiser 3.0L motor which i did a complete tune up on and had it running great...once it was put in the water it ran horribly, surging idle, stalling at low idle, shaking on its mounts as if it were missing and now the starter spins but does not engage? any help would be appreciated

the starter is brand new, it was bench tested and passed. this is what happened and is why i replaced the starter but it happened with that too. after bench test the starter worked.....guess i'll bench test again.

ring gear looks ok and in place, i'm going to replace it again.....im thinking of installing a fuel/h2o seperator. how can i tell if water is in the tank? boat ran great in my driveway with muffs for a long while, then ran a little rough after hard rain and bad once in the water. thinkin water is in tank......

Re: 3.0l troubles

make sure you got no vacuum leaks which makes for a rough idle
