Hello everyone, Im new to the forums and tried to search for some answers before posting. I have a 1990 Larson with a 4cyl 3.0L Mercruiser. My serial number is OC868706 and the outdrive is OD361137. I'm trying to identify the starter etc on this boat and get some info on the dist. cap and rotor setup. When i look up the serial number it says MCM 3.0L/LX alpha one. Can anyone help me find a NAPA powersport or marine starter for this boat. I know they have a marine division that i have order things through in the past. For some reason the starter they sent doesnt seem like the right one. Also does anyone have any install help or diagrams / service pages? Thanks again - JT

Mercruiser used 3 different starters between 90 and 94 any of them will work, but they all look different.

Thanks guys, No numbers that I see at all. The one they sent seems as if it has the staggered bolts but i assume its wrong becuase I cant find the bolts on the starter thats on there now. I assume the one thats on there has the straight bolts. Does it mount fomr the bottom? - JT

Yes, the bolts go up from the bottom. They should be pretty easy to feel, although they're a pain to get out since they go up from the bottom and are a little hard to get your wrench on. Here's a picture of one I found that looks like my '90 merc 3.0 - you can see where the two bolts (one long, one short on mine).

The starters GM used are a real pain since they have to be shimmed, and its near impossible to hear if your starter is stuck in when its on the bottom of a boat engine. So if you've got shims in there don't loose them, or let them fall when you take the starter out and forget how they go back.

A good mirror would probably really help you out.
