3.0 sluggish turnover

3.0 turns over pitifully slow, checked batteries and full charge, have full voltage on wires to starter. Read posts and thought it was most likely bad starter so I replaced it tonight, same thing. Noticed the tach needle was spinning completely around when cranking. Any thoughts, suggestions?? Boat was running fine two weeks ago.
Thanks!

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... Pull the cables off the battery, 'n clean 'em shiny metal Clean, reinstall, 'n grease 'em to keep 'em corrosion free,...

Then do the same to the other ends of those cables,....

That was my first step, showing good voltage through the cables.....

Do you mean you cleaned em like Bondo suggested or just that you're showing good voltage? You can show good voltage but not get enough amperage to the starter to crank the engine fast enough due to bad connections. Especially the grounds connection to the block. Jim.

I removed all the connections and brushed them down. Will check when cranking next, thanks

Does your motor start quickly?

My 2007 3.0 turns over rather slowly compared to any other car or boat with a 6 or 8 cylinder motor that I have owned. I was concerned like you that there was something wrong so I cleaned all the connections and checked the voltage and replaced the battery. My 3.0 TKS motor always fires up nice and quick even with a sluggish sounding turn over speed on the starter, so I'm feeling that this starter motor may not be able to turn at the high RPM's of other starters.

This is just my opinion, but you could always listen to other 3.0's turning over to see if yours is really that slow.

Yes, I cleaned the ground connections as well. It has always turned over much faster. I am going to try another battery hooked up directly tomorrow and then go through the wiring one more time, then to the mechanic......
Thanks for all the feedback so far!

Did you check the voltage while cranking the engine? Do either of the cables get hot while cranking the starter over? It has to be either a bad battery, starter or the wiring & connections in between the two. Wouldn't be the first bad "new" starter either.

I just checked my 3.0L & the battery was 12.76 volts resting & it dropped to 10.03 volts while cranking. I've got a '76 with a delco starter. What did yours read?
