3.0 Running Rough

So I bought a 91 Bayliner 2050 yesterday. The boat is in great shape, but the 3.0 is running rough. The PO states that the carb was rebuilt at the end of last season, along with new impeller and winterizing. When he started it a few weeks ago, he said it ran great for about an hour, then started sputtering. It will start right up and run smooth for a few seconds then starts acting up. The plugs looked good and compression was at least 165 on each cylinder (I checked). To me, it sounds like a fuel issue, but it could be ignition related. The PO seems to think it is bad gas. Any ideas on where to start.

Take a sample of your gas and make sure there's NO water in it.

Thanks for the responses. I am definetly going to tune it up, but i just have a feeling that it is something more serious. Will I be able to see the water in the gas sample?

Bingo! Bad gas. Water and all sorts of trash in the gas. I can't believe it even started up. I'll be sucking it all out this weekend and installing an inline filter/water seperator. Thanks for the help guys.

Get a few replacement filter elements for your inline filter. Chances are you will not be able to get all the fuel out (unless you can physically remove the tank from the boat). When you take it out, you might end up stirring up all the crap in the tank and clogging up filters while out on the water. It happened to me a couple years ago. Keep one or 2 filters in the boat in case this happens to you, just to be safe.

That is the plan. I'll keep extras in the boat. We will try and flush the tank with fresh gas as best we can to try and get as much crap out as possible before putting it in the water. I am sure the inlet filter on the carb is filthy as well. I will tackle all of it this weekend plus complete tune up. Can't sea trial it though until I invest some time and money into this trailer. Goal is to be on the water by May 22. Thanks for the suggestions.
