1800sl chaparral 3.0lx..I have a 14.5x15 on there now and I can go over 5k rpms which is not good for my motor I know but it's what came with the boat it's aluminum too and chewed to he'll..also a stainless steel 14.5 x21 stiletto came with the boat as well but I put it on and it planes out slower, like almost too long and I only get 4 k rpm. I tube. A lot and ski and normally have 4 people on board..I am trying to trade the stainless for another prop. Should I go for a 17 or a 19 pitch? I would like speed and balls for the tubes as well..I am worried with a 19 it won't plain the way I want it to but would work. The 17 should put me at 4800 or a little less which is good. I am going to an aluminum 3 blade so what do u guys think..17 or 19?

Re: 3.0 prop question..

I have a Bayliner 175. With my 3.0L Merc, I have an Alum. prop with 14.25" Diameter and 21" Pitch, and I can usually top out around 41 mph @ 4400 rpm. (My engine is rated for 4400-4800 at W.O.T).
The higher pitch your prop is, obviously it'll take longer to plane.
If the 17" pitch prop can top you out at 4600-4800 RPM, that's perfect, especially for towing tubes and skiiers. That's my opinion of course ;)

Re: 3.0 prop question..

Howdi, we have a 3.0 in our Bayliner and we run a Piranha 13" - 22P 4 Blade or a 13" - 20P 4 blade and we can pull wakeboards, slalom or 2 skiers or 2 tubes.
Our WOT is 4650 (GPS) 43 Mph with 2 adults in the boat.
It works well for us, but we did allot of trial and error to get what we wanted.
We had a 14.25"-21P 3blade and it was not very good.
Our boat has slightly higher compression than normal and we run 98 Octane fuel.
You will get a good starting point from here.

Re: 3.0 prop question..

Typically on a 18 or 19 that isn't a load about a 21 for max speed and will run 40+
I've seen as high as a 23.If you want a good all around prop you don't have to watch the revs like a hawk a 19 is the one.A 4 blade will let you have good hole shot, stay on plane at less throttle, resist venting ,handle better at speed and at the dock. Likely no worries about over rev.A 17 will jump out of the hole bit likely over rev easily.

Does the step down in 1 in pitch when switching from a 3 blade to 4 blade prop applies?
