Re: 3.0 oil

Volvo is very specific about oil, especially at break in. But, you're past that.

After break in, I went to Mobil 1.

Volvo specifically says not to use 10-30 or 10-40 non synthetic.

Your manual tells you all of this.

I use 15w-50 Mobil 1 in my engine.

Also add some Lucas oil conditioner. The previous owner of my boat had always used 4qts 15w40 with one quart lucas. Engine is 1996 and still purrs like a kitten. I don't intend to mess with the recipe that's worked this long

Use a quality motor oil and don't add a thing. It is a proven fact that a modern, properly formulated motor oil does not need to be conditioned, stabilized, treated, fortified, or anything else of the sort. Oil additives are only useful in separating you from your hard earned money. Now, oil additives don't necessarily do any harm, but they certainly do not provide any measurable benefits. That is why people get away with using them and believe they have found a magic "recipe". The recipe is already there in a quality motor oil. You don't need any high priced snake oil. Save your money. Boats are expensive enough.

If you want to do some reading and learn everything you will ever want to know about motor oil, Google "Bob Is The Oil Guy". It is a great site and if you spend some time there, you will completely re-think your ideas about lubricants.

if you understand flat tappets vs rollers, you then understand the need for zinc.

I sure do understand the difference, and also understand the movement away from ZDDP in SN rated oils due to the "poisoning" of catalytic converters. I know this very well because I own two 1960s restored muscle cars, but I still don't add any snake oil. My camshafts and lifters in both cars are plenty fine, and here's why:

I buy a high ZDDP oil from specialty blenders like Brad Penn, Amsoil, or Joe Gibbs. Again, I don't play "chemist" with additives. I let the professional chemists do the blending for me. Sure, these oils cost a little more, but I can be sure they were engineered from the ground up.

Products like Lucas Oil Stabilizer, if you want to talk Zinc, won't do a thing to help the situation. Simply do some research on these products, and you will find they amount to nothing beneficial.
