I have a 97 VIP w/ a Mercruiser 3.0 LX, alph one outdrive. Wal MArt does nothave a listing for boat engines. None of the GM vehicle have a listing for a 3.0 engine. so what filter do I use other than going to the marina and paying $12 for an oil filter?

What Fram part number will fit the 3.0?

Thanks in advance for your response.

Jay??

Let's see, there is over 60,000 members, so that means there is probably at least 30,000 differing opinions. :D

The Pro's will say stick with OEM. Like Tom, I have never had a problem with Fram in any engine I've owned. ;)

checv4ILs,6ILs and 8s should use the same type.in 4s and 6s you can use the short or long one. V6s and V8s should use the short one for ease of installation.the remote mounted filters use a different filter

I am with toms as long as you change it at least before each boating season. I do the same and never had a problem.

I just paid $7.50 for the OEM one at my dealer. I figured it was worth it, since I didn't know the exact specs of the filter.

However, if you go to the Fram website, they have a cross-reference tool that you can use. Mercruiser is not listed in the drop downs, so you have to use the Search tool...put in your Mercruiser Part number, and it will spit out a match. I found it there last week.

The one it gives you isn't as deep as the OEM one, so I chose not to use it, but it does point you to one, it wasn't the PH5 either.

Here:
Fram Cross-Reference Search

Click View X-Reference (Under Competitor X-Reference)

Put in the Mercruiser Part Number, and you'll find their recommendation. Good Luck!

The GOOD News.
I don't share all my opinions.

The BAD News.
I put Fram filters in the same group as Clymer's service manuals and Champion spark plugs.

Napa crossed mine over to one of thier napa gold filters..Same with my water separator filter.
Nice thing is they gave me a huge napa marine parts book! There engine and drive parts have the same part numbers that is in the sierra book.
I guess they make the marine parts for napa?

With something as important as a oil filter always save a buck on the part, engines are cheap

Some lite reading for you. See what filters are really made of.

Oil Filter Study

Don't forget to check out the Oil Filter Overview and click on the link at the top for the filters to avoid.

Re: 3.0 oil filter # (Fram or other Wal Mart product)

I hear ya Tom. Would be real interesting to see who the actual original OEM is on the various branded filters as well as OEM Specific. I would be extremely surprised if Merc, Volvo or BRP made their own filter.
