help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!im in trouble i have an 1987 sunbird corsair with a 3.0 mercruiser w/ alpha 1 outdrive i had a disaster happen last summer i trusted someone else to take plug out and he didnt , so the back of the boat filled up with water before i got back to the lake house . i quickly drained all water wiped everything down and drained the oil to put fresh in. i filled up the oil and continued to winterize the boat. when the water was in the back of the boat it rose to about where the intake connects to the block. im really worried i fried my engine!!!!! im stuck in a daze now thinking aout every little thing that might have happened to it does anyone have any kind of procedure on what to do when this happens? also before all of this happened i had an issue with the gear shifter it would go into drive fine and reverse fine if in nuetral to begin with but when boat is running you can slow down all way but really hard to get to nutral . if you turn engine off it feels like it shifts perfectly fine. not to sure about it . someone told me it could be a switch? also i had an issue at end of year where there was alittle bit of gear oil in the bilge dont no where it came from because i dont have an external tank for gear lube it stays in the outdrive ? any suggestions i really need help and all is apprieciated

Re: 3.0 mercruiser problems

I would remove your starter and have it checked out. Check all of your wiring for corrosion. Remove your spark plugs and try and turn your engine by hand.

As for your shifting problem. You are describing classic symptoms of a defective or maladjusted shift interrupt switch...

Re: 3.0 mercruiser problems

when the water was in the back of the boat it rose to about where the intake connects to the block.

Ayuh,.. In that case, the starter, 'n alternator were both underwater, 'n are probably Junk....
also i had an issue at end of year where there was alittle bit of gear oil in the bilge dont no where it came from because i dont have an external tank for gear lube it stays in the outdrive ?

Pull the drive, chances are the seal is gone at the top of the drive, allowing oil to seep back into the bellows, 'n into the boat...

If the shift switch is disconnected, that'll explain the problem with the shifting Out of gear...

What is the serial numbers on your engine/outdrive? I can get you a link to download the service manuals you need.
