I recently bought a 1990 Maxum bowrider and need to change the oil. Does the oil have to be pumped out or is the bolt under the oil pan a plug to drain the oil?

99.9% of the people pump the oil out through the dipstick, simply because you can't get a container under the pan to catch the old oil in. You might be able to put a plastic bag under the engine, but you better hope you don't puncture it trying to pull it out from under the engine.

don't know about your boat, but mine, ya can't even take the oil pan drain plug out w/o moving the engine. that makes an oil (fluid) extractor a must for my boat. + it's simple and easy to use, no mess, easy to transport to the recycle store, etc. they're a good investment... i'm in Don S' 99.9%..

Go to Walmart and pick yourself up an oil extractor for $30. Make SURE to run the engine for a few minutes on the hose before trying to pump out the oil or you'll burn out the extractor. After you've gotten all you can out of it with the extractor, jack the boat up as high as you can get it and take out the oil pan drain plug with a little plastic tupperware bowl or something under it and let it sit overnight and get every drop of everything you can out. Pop the drain plug back in afterwards and you're good to go.

I have enough room under the oil pan to cut a 1 gallon milk carton in half. I take the drain plug most of the way out, and then stick the carton under it. I fill it up half way and plug it. DO that twice and I have all the oil out.

Sounds messy. That puts you in the .01% that I mentioned that does it that way.
