Put a new starter on in the spring and it worked fine. Then the boat sat all season long while I was "vacationing" in Afghanistan. Charged the battery and tried it yesterday but only got a click. Motor is NOT frozen and I have rotated it by hand. Battery might not have been fully charged and I charged it again overnight to make sure but haven't installed it yet. My question ... is it possible for a new starter to go bad just from sitting? It has been 8 months after all. Thanks!

Ayuh,... Anything is Possible,...
But,....
I would sooner think there's Corrosion goin' on with the wiring Ends....
Remove, sand, clean,+ reinstall ALL of the wiring connections from the battery to the starter, Including the Ground path....
Then slather 'em with Grease,... That'll keep 'em from corroding again....

Btw,.... Thank you for doin' what you did, over There....
Yourself,+ the 100s of thousands of others are My Heros....;)

After you clean and tighten all the cables, if it still does it, try this.

And YES, the do go bad just sitting. If the starter is bad, take it to your local starter/alternator rebuild shop and have them look at it. Many times they can be fixed a lot cheaper than replacement.

It was the battery. Starter is cranking. Guess I got a little impatient on the first charging.

Bond-o, appreciate your comments! No hero here, just an "in the rear with gear" support guy. Many thanks though!

doesnt matter the positon, takes a lot to keep bullets and beans getting to where they have to go.
no one is more or less important in todays military unless maybe mess specialists.
I didnt mind boat riding so bad as long as I had chow.
