3.0 Merc hesitation

I bought a used 1995 Searay with a 3.0 merc with about 200 hours on it about 2 months ago. Needless to say I am new to this boat and the 3.0 merc. I have had the boat out a few times and have noticed that the motor boggs for a second or two when I go from a dead stop to WOT or when I go from about 20 mph to WOT. Also after running fast for a while and then going to idle the rpms will drop and it would stall after about a minute. I took it in for tune up and they did the ususal plugs, cap, dist, timing, and carb tune. The idle problem is gone but I still have the 1 second hesitation. What else should I be looking for or is this the nature of the beast? Also the boat has accumlated black smoke lines on the stern, which I was assuming were a result of a rich mixture at startup but it could be rich all the time. I haven't detected any smoke while running but that would be hard to see anyway. Outside of the hesitation the boat runs great.

Thanks,
Ryan

Re: 3.0 Merc hesitation

I have a 120 merc and I have always had that little bit of hesitation no matter how well it is running. It is nothing major that bothers me and I have accepted it. I think your last sentence sums it up. " Outside of the hesitation the motor runs great ". Are the WOT rpm's good?

Re: 3.0 Merc hesitation

I have a 140 that studders at take off, other than that it runs great. I am considering replacing points, but from what I have heard this stumble at take off is very common and almost impossible to resolve.
