1999 Four Winns Horizon 180 with 3.0 GS. Not sure if related, but the alternator and belt were replace during winterization by marina last year.

First time out this year I could hear a bit of a squeal when trimming, but only while the motor was running. I found a thread that suggested it could be the alternator belt and happening due to the extra power draw while trimming. I called the marina about it and they said the new belt my just need to "wear in" a bit.

A week later, took it out for 2nd time. No more trim squeal and everything seemed great, for a few minutes. Within 10 minutes I noticed the water temp gauge was nearly spiked. When I would pull back the throttle to a forward idle the temp would come down quickly. If I applied any power it would shoot straight back up. I checked the engine bay at idle and didn't notice anything. Started heading back to the dock and decided to try powering up one more time (dumb idea) and lost power steering. Checked the bay and found the belt to the power steering pump was snapped.

I'm wondering if there is anything that would cause issues with both the water pump belt and the power steering pump at the same time? And was there anything the marina may have done while change the alternator that could have caused it?

Ayuh,..... Depending on the belt configuration, Ya, it's all related,......

Somebody probably didn't tighten something up right,.....

Doubt the two are related myself. Usually when I change a belt for a customer, all of them get changed as the age of one is the same as the other. Other than a bearing going south, perhaps the belt was just old.

Fwiw, this is the belt configuration.

1. Power steering pump belt
2. Alternator belt
3. Supply water pump belt

They would’ve had to have taken the power steering belt off to change the alternator belt so they probably didn’t tighten it up enough
I found the receipt from last fall in my e-mail and I wasn't charged for a new belt so I'm thinking they just reused the one that was there and probably didn't have to mess with the power steering belt.

On another note, I hooked up the muffs yesterday and started it up wanting to see if I was getting any cooling water discharged. Neither the alternator belt nor the water pump belt were spinning.

After looking closer, I realized the diagram I posted doesn't match my setup. The alternator belt only wraps around the center pulley (circ pump) not the bottom one (crankshaft pulley?) So everything kind of makes sense now if the power steering belt drives the circ pulley which then drives the water pump and alternator. It was probably slipping at high rpm causing the overheat and then eventually broke.

I guess now I'm just curious as to why the setup doesn't match the manual. It is a Jasper, so not the original engine. Maybe the rebuild came with the wrong crankshaft pulley and they just made it work?

Usually it will come with the dampner only pulley is taken of the dead core engine

I'm starting to think the diagram in the shop manual is just wrong, even though there are multiple instances of it. Some of the actual engine pictures seem to show the alternator belt wrapping directly around the circ pump pulley.
