I would like to get some opinions about overhauling my 1985 4cyl. 50hp. mercury. Is
it better to get an overhaul kit, who sells the best one, or buy individual parts? I notice a lot of the pistons in
the kits and pistons sold seperately are 2 ring pistons , the pistons in my engine have
3 rings, does it matter? which is best 2 or 3 rings? what is the piston clearance for
.015 over size pistons? i would like to get the best quality parts i can. am open for
any and all help. .....THANKS TO ALL...........HAS

Re: 2nd opinions

2 strokes dont have oil rings.... You want to "mike" the cylinders to see if they are still within the engine wear spec's . The std bore size is 2.565 and wear limit is 2.568. You mike the cylinder at the top, middle and bottom and on a inline most wear is around the transfer ports. The amount of rings on the piston is of no concern and there are not many suppliers that make a 3 ring piston due to cost. I suggest you use a cast piston and not a forged due to the inlines cooling system(no t-stat). You can get 90% of your parts here on iBoats.....
