2hp vs. 4hp need some advice

Hello everyone, I'm new to these forums as I just got my first little outboard.
Its a 1992 Suzuki DT-2, 2 stroke, 1 cylinder, 25lbs.

I'm using it on a 12ft intex inflatable.
The engine runs fine, but its really slow.
I have found in the local classifieds a 1988 Johnson 4 HP, 2 stroke 2 cylinder, 50lbs.
My question is whether or not this motor will be significantly faster than the Suzuki?

I'm pretty sure the Suzuki is underpowered for the boat. There is no difference between 1/2 throttle and full throttle, like its bogging down a bit. The engine runs perfectly, and is super clean and was not used much so I think its running as well as it can. Can a sparkplug change make a difference even if it looks good?
Thanks in advance, I don't want to spend 400$ I can't really afford on a motor and be disappointed.

Re: 2hp vs. 4hp need some advice

I once went from a 3HP(25lbs.Tanaka) to a 4HP(47lbs.Yamaha) on my canoe and it went a bit faster but the weight was a hassle getting it on and off the transom, not worth the trouble, sold Yamaha and went back with Tanaka. I can imagine your 2HP is pretty slow on that 12ft. inflatable, and the 4HP would be faster/better, depends on how often you're putting motor on and off boat. The 50lb. motor is just kinda heavy for on/off transom, if you do it a lot! What's your inflatable boat rated for maximum HP?...should be on that capacity plate. Good Luck!

Find the capacity plate on your boat. It should say what the MAX HP is. Rule of thumb is that if you are at less than 50% of that, performance will be pretty bad. 75% is much better.

You may have to decide whether performance or engine portability is most important to you.

Don't expect a much better performance with 4 HP engine for that inflatable, that boat uses a removable transom mout which rocks no matter how well inflated you have that sib, will need to place a tacho to play with prop pitch for slight more speed, but will be overshadowed by the transom behaviour that bends against back sib when more power is applied. Try to get a demo or borrow somebody else's engine to test before throwing yourself into an empty deep pool!!

Happy Boating

the biggest difference you would see....other than muscle growth lol......would be a lttle bit extra control if it were a bit windy.
