Can anyone tell me if a 1957 - 59 35HP Evinrude bottom end is the same as a 1962-64 28HP? I have a chance to buy the 35HP (have the 28 now) and am thinking it might make a good parts or standby engine but it is missing the bottom drive unit (not the leg, just everything associated with the prop and skeg). The engine has great compression and appears to be in fairly nice shape for the year. Any opinions on the reliability of the 35 vs the 28? A buddy of mine who works on these old engines claims the 28 is a much better engine in his experience, the 35 being more troublesome - but I can't see why, they appear to be very similar. For $75 I don't think I could go wrong, but let me know what you think!! Thanks

Re: 28HP vs 35HP

I have a 1959 35HP Evinrude. Worked on it several times. Minor stuff. Carb,Fuel Pump, Water Pump. TO me its very reliable. Best of all its real easy to work on.. I wouldnt think there would be much if any differance in the lower unit. Good Luck! :)
