28 Johnson Shift linkage

Hey Guys, I took the lower unit off the motor to replace the impeller on my 1995 28hp Johnson. To do this I had to disconnect the shift linkage. Now as I reassemble the motor, I cannot get the linkage from the lower unit to correctly fit into the clamp that connects the two. It will only slide in maybe half of what it should be. I have been looking at it for an hour trying to get it where it needs to be and am out of ideas. Any thoughts?

have you tried removing the bolt from the clamp? sometimes the bolt won't allow the shift rod to go back in, if that doesn't work try removing the clamp and opening it up a little bit with a flat blade screwdriver.

Thanks for the tip, I got a bit stubborn and failed to see that I could open it up with a screwdriver. Got everything back together and working properly best I can tell. I will run it in a tank tommorrow.
