I have twin 2007 275 Verardos 800 hrs. Center Console. My Starboard engine was at 4500 rpm when it made a quick clank, and the rpms went way up. I pulled the throttle back and it won't go in gear. I checked the prop hub and listen for any noise when I manually moved the prop shaft. No noise and engine sounded fine. The reason I think the drive shaft broke is the impeller won't engage and the engine than overheats? Why would a drive shaft break with low hours and regular service? It won't go in reverse or forward. If it was a shift actuator the impeller should still work? Thanks

You may want to have mods move this to Merc OB section - but yes your thought about the water pump is not turning thus drive shaft is broken is probably correct.

As for why you probably have to drop the lower and look at driveshaft to see

Either splines stripped in crank or shaft broke above impeller which be noisy as crap. Could have the stubby shaft unit if 25" or longer and coupler stripped connecting engine to lowrer

Ugh. stripped splines sound expensive. Does that require me to remove the power head or just the flywheel? Hoping for the broke shaft. If it broke near the impeller, it's probably held in place that's why I don't hear any clank noise (at least praying) Where is the "coupler stripped "connected to the engine located? Dropping 30" lower unit this weekend. Thanks

So I dropped the lower unit and the shaft broke near the O ring up at the crank. Not sure how to get the spline piece of the shaft out of the crank? Magnet, brake cleaner and WD, pressure washer, tap on the top of the flywheel? Any ideas?

Hook a waterhose to water tube and start it ..Let it run 10-15 minutes and maybe heat and engine vibration will cause it to drop out. If not gotta pull he powerhead

UGH! This just became expensive. Lower unit oil looked great. Pulled the lower unit gear case and all the gears behind the gear case and back of the prop shaft was FUBAR. Not sure what could have caused it Still to need to try getting the nub out of the crank. I ordered a magnet that can pull 30lb. If I can't get it out it will be MO MONEY

Sorry to hear that - if the gear locked up that's why the driveshaft broke.

You might be able to weld a bolt or stud to the drive shaft piece that is stuck in there and use a slide hammer to pull it out. Hopefully the abrupt stop didn't damage the power head- I assume they design the drive shaft to break vs snapping your crank shaft ?
