I have a 275 Aqua Drive with tilt. The tilt went down and runs but will not go back up. Do I need to take it totally apart or is there something I can try?
Check to see if the reverse lockdown is releasing.
Many times the sleeve (B in picture upper left below) end gets damaged and the motor will not release the lockdown, and the motor will not over power the lock down.
That does sound like what is happening. The Electromagnet is engaged and I can manually release by pulling up on the drive. Is there a trick to make it release. It sound like I need to replace the the sleeve then?
Here's a pic of the sleeve with the foot of the lift mechanism just above. yours should look something like this when the outdrive is down. As the foot of the lift comes down it contacts the sleeve and pushes the rod below, opening the retaining pawls and allowing the outdrive to tilt.
not sure this is your problem, however was my experience:

You seem to understand roughly how a Mercruiser trim works, but it has nothing to do with how his Volvo tilt only system works. All tilt and trim systems aren't the same.
In the Picture that commander sent my thrust plate is touching the thrust sleeve when in the down positon and there is no gap. In fact when I first was looking at it the sleeve it looked to be stuck in the down positon. I did get it free to pop up but still not working.
there are many reasons for the tilt to not work. You need to go through it systematically if possible. Take some pics if you can. Right now we're still guessing.
Have a helper run the switch and see if the foot of the tilt mech. is moving at all. Perhaps raise the outdrive by hand and see if the foot extends without any resistence.
The thrust sleeve should not protrude out of the hole in the tilt arm any more than necessary or it can bind in the hole like it sound like yours may be doing. However this shouldn't cause your current problem.
Well I'm back and got the tilt fixed. I wish I had a picture of what broke, however the mechanial shaft that runs to the bottom is welded to a round disc that spins at the bottom and the shaft snaped off the disc at the weld. Thanks for all your help.
