270 Mercury stern drive? Motor oil.

Have a 270 mercury sterndrive. I have bought the boat, but have not drained the foot since i got it. Made shre it was full. When i drained it, it was motor oil in the foot. About 2.5 quarts. Is this correct. I cannot find in my manual its on pdf file. It just says a G5 type. Anybody know what is the correct lubricant. If the motor oil is wrong, has any damadge been done. Thanks.

Merc doesn't make a 270, that's Volvo. Or do you have a 260??

Since Merc manuals don't recommend using G5 gear oil, I betcha' you are correct about the Volvo, Don.

You did not say what year this is. However, Merc did make a 270. They made them in the early 1970's. The ones I have worked on had the TR drive on them. They are rare, but they did make them. Does this outdrive have a oil tank built into the top of the transom inside the boat? If so it uses hypoid 90w gear oil.

Forgot the amount of gear oil it takes but it was about 2.5 quarts maybe a little more. It takes alot more gear oil than the Pre Alpha's and Alpha's.

Here is a listing of all the 2XX drives listed by Mercuriser in the Merc dealers program. They had 250's, 260's, and 280's but no 270's.

Don, sorry your dealer book dont list them? 1969 thru 1972. Serial number range is 2851074 thru 3077735.

But that's not a sterndrive, it's a transmission. A Borg Warner Velvet drive to be exact.

He said he has a 270 sterndrive (year unknown), and he drained the "foot" of about 2.5 quarts of what he thought was motor oil, not gear lube.
I asked for pictures, since a Volvo 270 outdrive uses motor oil in the drive, not gear lube and holds about 2.5 quarts.
Now, you find a 270 motor with a transmission, not a sterndrive, and not a foot.
after looking what was available back then, bet he has a III drive, (not 270).
Amazing, he was just online and didn't feel the need to answer or add to this discussion of what HE has.
