I had to pull the boat today because the shift linkage let go. It had been stiff going into reverse lately. Problem solved? Not really. Tested the cable (new last year) and it goes forward/reverse no problem. Tested the forward/neutral/reverse shifter on the front of the drive, moves smoothly. Problem seems to be the reverse lockout pawl. When shifting into reverse it appears to bind somewhere. Haven't had any problems until this season. Any ideas on why this would get stiff all of a sudden? Any way to cure it? Thanks VM.

Maybe something got bent. At least that is what I have found in cases like this.

If you run salt water it could be the cable again, Or you might want to look at the end of the cable where it hooks up to the stern drive to make sure the brass 90 degree fitting and the cotter pin is not on backwords and hitting the drive housing.::eek::)

Thanks for the replies. No this is a freshwater boat and the cable moves freely. I will check to see if the pawl is bent when I get to the marina today.

Can anyone explain how the lock collar works? My problem is that the retaining pawl rod is binding on the lock collar. I can tilt up and down and the od locks in the down position, regardless of whether the lock collar is engaged or not. It unlocks when I tilt up only. Is this correct? Thanks again.
