260 mercruiser runs hot at WOT

I have two boats with chevy 350/260 mercruiser(both were built around 1976-1978). Both are doing the same thing...run hot when at high rpm. I can cruise at 3,000 or so rpm and stay around 160 or less. At 4,000-4,500 the engines will top 180 and be at 200 degrees in no time. The big boat (24' bayliner monterey cabin cruiser) has a relatively new long block, both engines have clean new exhaust manifolds (log type). The big boat is so heavy it really heats up fast. Too, it has a 470 (1.98) outdrive (originally 260s were coupled to a 1.5 outdrive). The big boat is hardly moving at 2,000-2500 rpm and I have to get up around 4,000 rpm to get speed just to stay up with the traffic on the lake. but over 2,000 rpm the ski boat (20'hammond) is zooming fast enough to pull skiiers with ease. I'm thinking I need more of a low speed type outdrive on the big boat because it is taking too much of a bite out of the water with the 1.98 gear ratio.... however, I just feel that both boats are unreasonably overheating. I'm a good mechanic and have been through both engines and boats very well. Big boat sounds like a loaded train trying to get a big load moving and vibrates alot around 2,500 but smooths out once speed is up. Ski boat just jumps out of the water and hauls tail....somebody help me think about this.

You need to find the correct prop for the boats. The correct prop will get you the proper WOT (Wide Open Throttle) rpm recommended by the manufacturer. To low a WOT RPM and you will overload the engine and wear it out real fast. To high an rpm and you will loose speed.
Overproping will cause overheating along with low WOT rpm's.
Another cause for overheat is old raw water pump impellers. 2 years is max on Alpha impellers.

Impellers are not the problem here...BRAND NEW...it's an easy 30 minute job and I get them cheap. I've been told that changing from 3" to 4" manifolds will help.... I'd think that the designers and engineers know more about these things than I do... I just don't know who to believe.

Don S... reckon switching to a 1.5 oudrive will help and getting rid of the 1.98 outdrive? Around here alot of people look for the 1.98 to conserve on fuel.

The engine determines the type of drive ratio
big block 1.32/1
sm block 1.50/1
v6 1.84/1
inline6 1.65/1
inlline 4 1.98/1
correct WOT determined by the prop

Yep... 1.50 was what mercruiser put on all 260's of that era (350 Chevy's) but my books tell me that the old 140's (181 cid Chevy 4 cylinder of that era) all had the same gear ratio. The 470's (inline 4 cylinder Ford)had the 1.98 and despite some bad rap it was a heck of a good engine even if it was built on a Ford block.
