1979 Carver 23' Runabout with 260 Mercruiser and SE 106 Outdrive.
Had boat in garage for most of winter, working on various non-mechanical things. Pulled it outside a few days ago, and it will crank but not start. Doesn't seem to be getting any power to the coil. All connections to the slave selenoid are intact, points are gapped correctly, plugs and wires are only a season old.
Most obvious problem: There is a black double-wire with one half attached to the terminal block and one to the interrupt switch, then both halves leading to the top of the outdrive housing area at the transom (sorry, I am a novice and not sure what this is called... it's attached at the assembly that goes through the transom to the outdrive - bell housing?).
I cannot see what or exactly where this double-wire is attached to, but it once returned from this attachment point, back to the rear of the motor and was supposed to connect with something... Not sure what. That end of the wire is now rotted away.
I think it was like this last year, and I believe it's for the trim guage or trim limit switch which has not worked since I bought the boat. Not sure if it's related to my lack of spark or a seperate problem.
I have also pulled the interrupter switch becase the brown wire leading from it to the coil is almost rotted away, which suggested maybe I am not getting any juice to the coil. The previous owner hot soldered the wires to the interrupter switch, which makes me think I need to just replace it and move on, but I cannot find one on line. Any tips?
And finally, the throttle cables really need to be replaced, but if I understand the Adults Only sticky and several other posts correctly, this would only cause a problem in gear or when shifting, not when trying to start on the muffs.
So, sorry for such a long note. Here are my questions:
Do I need to replace the Interrupter Switch or can I just melt the solder and tag new wires?
If I need to replace it, where can I get one?
Am I correct about the double black wire, and what does it connect to? The wiring diagram isn't very clear to me.
Am I on the right track at all?
ultimately, I am just trying to get the boat started again, but I realize now after doing some reading - this thing is gonna kill my summer!
