25hp Pinion and Driveshaft Issues

Recently purchased a 1970 25hp Johnson lower unit from ebay. Upon arrival i tore it all down to inspect it as it was marked "as is", everything looks to be intact, no broken parts, and doesn't leak. But.. the shear pin that hold the impeller sits too low and isn't engaging the impeller and heavily scoring the metal impeller plate. I'm thinking that the shaft extends too far down into the pinion bearing, maybe the wrong shaft or pinion? Anyone have any thoughts?

One thing i forgot to add.. the shaft sticks out a half inch or so past the pinion and hits the clutch dog.

Somewhere in history, some parts got swapped. Earlier motors (like 1960's) had a snap ring in the bottom of the pinion and the drive shaft sat on the snap ring. Later motors (like 1970's) no longer used a snap ring and another method was used to support the drive shaft.

If this is a good guess, take a look inside the pinion to see if there is a groove in there for a snap ring. I'll bet there is a groove and the snap ring fell out.

Thanks for the help! Looks like the 1962 model had the snap ring. Hopefully it won’t raise it too high.

1970 model doesn't show a snap ring. Maybe what you bought is not from a 1970, or a mix of parts?
