25hp mariner/ what year?

I just bought this motor. The previous owner said he thinks it is a 1983. I went to the local marine dealer and I gave the model number that I found on the motor and he said that it doesn't make any sense. I heard that Yamaha made these motors around that time frame and I also mentioned that to the marine dealer and he said that never happened. Can any one shed some light on this for me? The model number that I found was this:

Mariner 25E
695 553807

That is exactly the way it looks on the motor.

Sure it's not 659.......if so that would make it an 84..if not..Sorry, I can't be of help. There should be 7 numbers sometimes with a letter in front.

I double checked and it is definately 695. The 553807# is on a silver plate. This is what I see:

MARINER 25E
695 553807
MADE IN JAPAN

On a side note, what is the preferred plug gap for this motor? Thanks
