25hp Johnson running hot?

After running wide open for a while I noticed my engine sound changed, no loss of power. I stopped the boat and noticed steam around the engine. The water from the pee was very hot. The pee water has always been more of a splutter, not a fine line........is that normal? I took off the engine cover and could only press my finger on the block for a few seconds. What tests should I do to determine if I have an overheating problem? (By the way, I replaced the thermostat and impeller after I bought the engine)

You could have snagged weeds or a plastic bag, covering the water intakes. Keep an eye on that telltale. They call it pee for a reason. I'd rather pee a stream than sputter.

Spero, all of my johnsons pee/splatter out. i would not be concerned with it as long as the "Flow" has not decreased. if so, like willy said, check the intake and be sure its clear, next you might check or just replace the thermostat, kinda sounds like its opening up to late.. be careful as you know a change in Motor sound is something not good.<br /><br />Check intake, Theromastat, and then look at your impeller, maybe a piece came off and is stuck in the tube, that happened to a Merc of mine.<br /><br />Keep in mind i get more help on this site than i can give, but i have learned so much i have to give something.....

I you haven't changed your water pump impeller, you're due.<br /><br />If it got hot, re-torqueing the head bolts is a good idea. Watch your spark plugs, if one gets REAL clean, you popped a head gasket.<br /><br />Personally, I prefer to change a head gasket after an engine runs hot. That's a great time to replace the thermostat too. Neither is very expensive.<br /><br />You can prabably do all three for around $50.00. Then you'll know your cooling system is in tip-top shape.
