On the underside of my cowling there is foam that over the years has started to break apart. Not sure if it's factory or put in from the previous owner for noise reduction? Anyway, the bits and pieces have been sucked into my carb (sitll don't understand why Johnson never put a breather on these motors). I plan to remove all foam, sand, and paint with something high temp. Should I replace the foam or leave it bare? My choice is the later because I don't want it to happen again.

I see what you mean. I cleaned mine out two years ago, and do not plan on putting any new foam back in. The motor is a little louder, mostly a throaty sound from the carb inhaling air when I go to WOT. In order to get the foam particles and glue out of the cowling, I did find that spray wood stripper and a 3m scotch brite pad works very well. Just make sure to rinse it out with soapy water when your done.

The foam is factory,What I do is spray the foam and interior cowling with a cleaner.Let it set then use a pressure washer,it gets loose foam and sand out,I let it dry then use some contact cement to glue the loose foam back in place. You dont need the foam. You also if your going to paint it dont need high temp paint,Your engine should not get that hot.
