Hello,<br /> Iam trying to replace the water pump impellar. I need to know how to disconnect the shift rods. I have searched throu the posts but cannot find an answer. There is no plate to remove and loosen bolts that I can find. I can see the shift rods on the bow side of the motor, but no bolts to loosen even if I could get to them. Please Help! Tank You

You must remove the water intake screens on the lower unit (usually black plastic) to access the shift rod to disconnect it... <br /><br /> The shift rod is behind the two screens... The shift rod is bolted together there.... <br /><br />You will need two open end wrenches to loosen the nuts (7/16" or 1/2" wrenches i believe)...

Hi Ken 64<br /><br />I dont remember if it was 84 or 87 they changed the design for the 25HP´s, it was in 80 for the 35 HP. But if it isnt behind the black plastic water intake, removed with 4 phillips screws at sides of lower unit, it is at the left side of leg, seen from back, behind a little lid held by two screws. The bracket has two 1/2" bolts -loosen both and remove lower completely. Remember to adjust rod length when assemlbing again. Good luck.

Ken..... After you disconnect the shift linkage as per SnapperBait's instructions,you will also need to remove the small plastic bevel type part as well as the connecting nut that is on the bottom portion of the top rod. Pay attention as to which way the bevel faces.
