Just got an early 80's merc 25. Ran it on the muffs and didn't notice any shifting issues. On the water today and she had a hard time shifting into forward. When I got home I shifted into reverse and the prop locks. Nuteral spins freely, but when in forward it locks in one direction and spins by hand in the other direction. Any ideas? I imagine I need to drop the lower unit and see what looks funky. Mooch

In forward you can spin the prop clockwise but not counter clockwise. Very normal.

Forgot to mention that it was only acting funny getting into gear. Once in gear it ran fine and got up on plane.

Turns out it only has a hard time shifting when under a load. Could this be a simple cable adjustment? Under a load makes me think gears. I drained the oil and there was a small amount of flakes.

Re: 25hp forward shifting??

it is more likely the clutch dog slider that is worn if the metal flakes were of a bronze color. the clutch dog should engage fairly quickly and if the cable for the gas is to short and gives the motor fuel before the motor is in gear, it should be adjusted. It should be set so the motor will idle some in gear, before the carb gives the motor more fuel. Rattling noise from the LU means that the clutch dog and gears need to be look into and replaced if bad. JMO
