I have a 1975 , 25hp electric start johnson that will not fire when keyed. How do you test the solenoid to see if it is working and what else do i check to get to fire? Thanks for your help in advance.

Re: 25hp electric start johnson will not fire

Hey, Joe. When you say it will not fire, do you mean that the starter motor doesn't turn over, or that the engine doesn't start?

If you aren't getting a click from the solenoid when you turn the key, the most likely cause is that it thinks you have it in gear. There is a switch in your controller that prevents starting unless the controller is in Neutral.

With the ignition switch OFF, place a jumper wire from the 12v large terminal on the solenoid to the small terminal wired to the switch. The solenoid should click and the starter motor should run. That will confirm that the problem is in the neutral start switch, the ignition/start switch, or in the wiring to the solenoid.

Good luck.
JB

JB the motor all most jumped of the stand it was on when i rigged it the way you said to.The starter spun the fly wheel but i could not here the solenoid click becouse of the starters noise.Does this mean that the solenoid is junk? Will any old 12volt solenoid work? Please advise. Thanks again.

Hi, Joe. If you placed the jumper correctly, the solenoid works. Your starter switch isn't getting voltage to the solenoid, because it is faulty, the Neutral safety switch in your controller is faulty, or there is a fault in the wiring associated with these switches.

Good luck.
JB

Hey, Joe. Do you know how to use a multimeter? With a manual you will be able to find the fault. You can buy a Clymers Shop Manual that covers your engine for about $35, or you can probably borrow one at your local library.

The controller is the box with your throttle/gearshift, and, in most cases your ignition/starter switch. You said you had it on a stand. Is it a tiller control, not a remote control engine? Do you use a button or a key to start it?

By the way, did this engine ever work for you, or did you just buy it from someone else who couldn't get it to start? Tell us the history. . . it often points to the cause of the trouble.

Standing by.
JB

Re: 25hp electric start johnson will not fire

I have had this motor for the pssed 15years. I tryed to start it in the spring of last year when i turned to the key nothing, not even a click. The controller has the throttle and gearshift on it the wireing is separate unit which has a toggle switch for the choke and then there is the key. I was thing that the controller was on the motor where the shifter is.The starter cable has five[5] wires two[2] black one[1] green one [1] red and one [1] white. The red goes to the toggle switch for the coke the other four connect to the key switch. Hope this info helps.
