I may have the oportunity to buy a '78 204 Grady w/ a 250 inline 6 merc. The engine supposedly has a knock when its warm Also may come with another engine (same type). Is there anything else I should know about this set-up? I'm not too familiar with IO's. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: 250 inline 6

Very popular engine. 165 HP. Ifs its a 1978 it will have the Mercrusier I stern drive which parts are plenty. I would make sure the noise is really in the engine and not the outdrive. Outdrives can make you think its the engine somtimes. Several ways to do this.

Look at the "bellows" with the drive up. (Hoses) and make sure none are cracked and broken to let water in. The drive will need to be pulled and the u-joints and driveshaft greased. Also grease the gimble bearing. Grease fitting is about 4 o'clock position on the stearn drive transom plate. Also find out when the last time the riser and exhaust manafold were changed? If its a saltwater boat they need to be changed about every five years to keep water from entering the engine by a rusted out riser/manafold.

In my opinion that is one of the best engines ever used in a boat...inline Chevy 6 with 251 cu. in. Smooth, fuel efficient and good low end torque. Also easy to work on and get parts for.

I agree with both the guys above, you won,t find a more reliable engine. it is bullet proof. just keep oil in it.

Free Bee----I bought a runabout in 1990 with this motor and drive. It had 100 hours on it when I bought it. Sold it last year with 814 hours. We ran the snot out of it (boat full of kids, pulling three tubes, etc., etc.)

Only thing I ever had to do with this motor was routine plugs and points. I did change oil every 40 hours in the motor and drive unit. Finally got tired of messing with points and put in the magnetic spark advance Overton's sells for about $100.

Mine had the knock. Had two different mechanics take a look---said not to worry. It never affected performance. I am curious as to what it was.

I had a rather loud knock in a motor that turned out to be the fuel pump... for what it takes it's worth checking.

Re: 250 inline 6

I just found out there is outdrive at all. How much should I expect to pay for a decent used outdrive? Any ideas where to look?

Check this site-"iboats".

It may be expensive, no matter where you buy, because you do not have a core.
