25 Yamaha starter

I am trying to pull a starter from a 25 2002 Yamaha. I have removed the 2 mounting bolts. I have disconnected the negative wire and the positive wire at the solenoid. I have pried the mounting bracket away from the engine but the starter does not want to come up and out. Is there something connected at the bottom of the starter?

What is the complete model of the motor?

I am guessing that you might have an F25 or a T25 but have no way of knowing.

Yamaha offered 9 different 25 HP models in 2002.

My problem is I can't remove the nut on the end of the shaft to replace the broken spring.
The only reason I am trying to remove the starter is because I cannot remove the nut on the end of the shaft to replace the broken spring that pushes the bendix away from the flywheel. How can I keep the motor's shaft from turning so I can remove that nut.
