Hi folks, i'm a newbie to this forum, love it.. I have a question. My 25 hp tohatsu model# m25c, I think it's an '86. The engine was partially submerged in salt water and consequently the lower crank bearings, lower rod and wrist pins are bad. Otherwise motor is fine. (top end ignition, starter etc.was not affected) ran good but the bearing noise called for a thorough investigation. Anyway, a tohatsu dealer has the crank kit for roughly 650.00, another dealer guy said the crank can be rebuilt for about a 3rd. of that price. Any thoughts or opinions are greatly appreciated... I have good ones in stock for $ 100 US. It will cost a bit more for freight, but you are still in front
Regards, Paul

Dang, wonder what the freight would be from down under to Jersey? And if the crank wasn't any good, how much would the plane ticket be to send Rocko and Lefty down there to swap his kneecaps?

Contact Tohatsu, about 7 years back thay had a shop rebuilding there cranks for warranty, and non warranty repair. There is a crank shop somewhere close to Clearwater Florida that does the motorcycle roller bearing cranks, that may do the job. Saerch crankshaft on web.

helodoc,

This place: CACranks@aol.com (949)222-9006, specializes in cranks for 30 hp. and up. They MIGHT be able to help. Heck, the Tohatsu 25 and 30 are the same engine-sans restrictor plate. ;)

Good luck.

Re: 25 hp tohatsu crank woes

Thanks for the info, djohns19, clanton, BigFellaQld, and
Capt Ken. I'm going for the rebuild, makes the most sense. BigFella, Thanks for the offer, but considering the up front costs (good price though) plus the shipping, best to do the rebuid here. I'll let you guys know how I made out and who did the work, if that's OK.. AL

No worries, mate. The cranks are as easy as you like, to press yourself if you have access to a small press. We do them all the time, all parts are available, and cheap as chips, (Over here, anyway, dunno about there). One thing to be careful of, is that Tohatsu had a dodgy run of top main bearings, a little while back, so be careful you dont get one of the suss ones, or the thing will grenade pretty quick, apart ffrom that, easy as falling off a log

Regards, Paul

BigFellaQld,

I live in Sydney Australia and I have a 1992 Tohatsu 90 hp which has had salwater get into the crank. I am interested in your prices as I was told a new crank is worth about AUD 2500. Are you talking about rebuilt cranks at those sort of prices? Do you know of one being available for this model?

Internetoutboards,

1100 USD translates to 1463 AUD. Sounds like it would be worth importing one from the US given that I have been quoted about $2500 here in Australia. This doesnt tally up with what BigFellaQld has been saying. Does anyone know how I can contact him through this site?

Re: 25 hp tohatsu crank woes

That post of his is three years old...And most parts for the crankshaft are not available here in the U.S. I doubt that you can get them in Australia as well. Tohatsu has mixed feelings about providing crankshaft parts since very few shops have the ability to press them together correctly. It is a lot more difficult to do...then some people think. I have seen some very good motorcycle shops who press motorcycle cranks apart and put them back together correctly...But since they DO NOT have the right jig for an outboard crankshaft I have seen those same motorcycle shops screw up an outboard crankshaft. I'm not saying that it can not be done. I'm just saying that there is a 99.99% chance that it will not be done correctly.

Re: 25 hp tohatsu crank woes

Internetouboards,

What you said might explain the trouble Im having getting my crank rebuilt. It is at an outboard engineering shop who said they can build a metal sleeve around the rusty sections and use new bearings to match. My problem is that they have had it for 11 weeks and they can't tell me when it will be finished. I have heard Tohatsu cranks are harder to get apart than other makes.
I am at the point of telling them they can keep the crank and getting a new unit, even if it costs me $2500.

Re: 25 hp tohatsu crank woes

here in the states I have used ackerman marine in wilmington NC for several inline 4 tohatsu cranks and some suzuki cranks. seems they did a good job. all the engines are still crabbing.
the tohatsu needed all the bearings and 1 rod the 3cyl suzuki neded two rods all the craankpins and bearings. both cost just under 650 to have fixed.

Re: 25 hp tohatsu crank woes

Ackerman is one of two people in the U.S. that I would trust to rebuild a crank, but sending the crank to them from Australia may not be worthwhile due to the cost of shipping.
